Purpose of this blog

All of the main action occurs on the Facebook page, so be sure to go there and vote. This page is intended to a) explain what's going on and b) allow me to post some graphic representations of the brackets without interrupting the flow over there.

Explanation
This is a bracket style tournament of all the songs that reached #1 in the 80s. There were 230 songs. Brackets work best when you have a power of 2 and the nearest power of 2 is 256. To make this work, I gave 26 songs a first round bye. The second round will have 128 songs, third round 64 and so on and so on.
The list was collected from here. I seeded the songs by the number of weeks they were at #1. Some extra consideration was also given to songs that were the #1 song in their particular year. I'm not going to pretend that this necessarily evaluates the songs by quality but this was the least subjective way I could think of putting them in some kind of order.
I took the songs and split them into 8 brackets of 32. (Well, less than 32 since the top songs got a first round bye, but you get the picture.) The tournament is set for each of those 8 brackets to be voted on until there is one winner left from each. Then those "great 8" songs will compete. I placed the songs in the brackets in a "snake" pattern: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1..etc. Once that was done, I moved some songs around so that artists wouldn't be facing their own songs. (If I was doing this again, I would have made some effort to try to have songs from different years and styles competing more but it is what it is.)

I put this all together because I thought that this type of thing should be out there in the world.
